<p> Last week, Kansas City-based technology company k12itc landed a five-year service agreement with Unified School District No. 232 of Johnson County, KS (De Soto), over three local and national vendors.  </p>

<p>De Soto USD 232 found a challenge in finding and retaining qualified personnel to lead its technology department.  The district was also determined to maximize existing resources and find a more instructional basis for technology decision making.  In order to fulfill these needs, the district explored the possibility of outsourcing its technology management efforts and ultimately decided on k12itc to provide these services.  </p>

<p>According to the district, k12itc identified collaboration, professional development and an enthusiasm for co-creating a vision for the district’s future as critical elements to its management plan.  In addition, the district was impressed with the company’s ability to provide customized IT services by leveraging a specialized mix of cloud computing technologies, localized resources, virtualization and education-specific competencies.</p>

<p>When compared to other local and national bidding vendors including Dell, k12itc was the only one that created a strategic plan for cost savings.  The technology company’s services reduced a number of network resources and provided the district with estimated cost savings of nearly $  1.2 million over five years.  </p>

<p>NXP Semiconductors and Impinj were selected as runners-up for their demonstrations of how radio frequency identification can be embedded in electronic devices to enhance functionality. Impinj’s Lock-in-Transit demo showed how electronics could be locked prior to shipment from a manufacturer, in order to discourage theft. A tablet, computer or smart phone could then be unlocked at a retail store by sending a password to the RFID transponder wired to the device&#8217;s CPU, or a consumer could take the item home and log on to a secure Web site to authenticate and unlock it.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>NXP’s Interactive EPC Gen 2-Tablet Wireless Bridge demonstration showed how a transponder embedded in the device could provide retailers with new revenue-generating opportunities, by enabling them to offer customers options for customizing an electronics gift within a factory-sealed box. The demo explained how a customer could select an electronic card, wallpaper or special subscription offer, and the information could then be transmitted to the device via the RFID transponder embedded within.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>Attendees were encouraged to view all demonstrations by participating exhibitors, and to vote for the one they considered the coolest. RFID Journal&#8217;s editors made the final choice, based on the vote totals and their own judgment. There were no hard-and-fast rules regarding what constituted a cool demo, and participants did not need a complete real-world application. The main criterion for judging was whether a demo had a “wow” factor—that is, whether it was creative enough to impress judges and lure more attendees to a booth.</p>
<p>&#13;</p>
<p>“There were a lot of great demos throughout the hall, and there was a lot of buzz about them throughout the event,” said Mark Roberti, RFID Journal&#8217;s founder and editor. “With a full year to plan, I’m sure the exhibitors will come up with even cooler demos next year.”</p>

<p>Teaching the basics of food safety to your children is not only important to their health, but it can also be fun and rewarding. Start with these prevention tips while empowering kids to keep a watchful eye on food safety practices at home.</p>

<p>Ask the kids to follow the “A-B-C” rule, which stands for “always be clean!”  Here’s how:&#13;<br />
</p>
<p>&#13;<br />
     Always have clean hands. Wash hands often with antibacterial soap and warm water for 20 seconds, or about as long as it takes to sing the A-B-C’s song. Wash hands both before and after handling food items in the kitchen.&#13;<br />
     Always use a clean cutting board. Consider cutting boards of different sizes and colors to keep raw meat, poultry or seafood completely separate from ready-to-eat foods like fruits, vegetables, cheese or breads. Store cutting boards in a lower cabinet and teach the children to select the right color or shape for the job.&#13;<br />
     Always keep raw meat and fish wrapped and separated.  Separate raw items when shopping to prevent them from touching foods like fruit or salad items.  Consider a separate grocery tote for raw items and wash out thoroughly before re-use. Even store raw meats and seafood on a low shelf in the refrigerator to prevent an accidental drip on items below.
<p>“Food poisoning can be easily prevented with practical steps, such as separating raw meats from ready-to-eat foods, and using (at least)two cutting boards, to stay safe in the kitchen,” said Ruth Frechman, a registered dietitian and Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics spokesperson.  “Don’t confuse them, and always wash (cutting) boards thoroughly in hot, soapy water or in the dishwasher after each use,” Frechman says.  “Discard old cutting boards that have cracks, crevices and excessive knife scars.”</p>

<p>According to FreePriceAlerts.com CEO Bob Wilkins, recent online sales of black lingerie have skyrocketed, even surpassing Valentine’s Day. The best selling romantic novel, Fifty Shades of Grey has also seen a sales spike. </p>

<p>“With Fifty Shades of Grey, we’re not sure if this is Mom shopping for Mom,” Wilkins said. “Or if it’s Dad buying the book and wrapping it with the lingerie they bought online from JC Penney or Target.” </p>

<p>Other gifts include women’s watches, sets of women’s golf clubs, and iPad cases—sales of which Wilkins said are far higher than iPad sales. </p>

<p>Wilkins added that a number of online retailers like Kmart and Target have seen at least a 50 percent increase in online sales over the past 10 days but, JC Penney has seen the largest increase as traffic to jcpenney.com increased by over 300 percent. </p>
